DCS and HMI Systems are determined by their need for functionality. All of the major vendor offerings are very good. In our experience Emerson Process Management PROVOX is what we see the most of in our work. But that does not mean that Honeywell and FOXBORO are not as well represented. In our business we work with clients that are migrating to newer Windows based systems such as DeltaV. More and more we see the traditional DCS being replaced by the HMI’s with PLC communication. The current batch of PLCs offer many options traditionally offered only by DCS vendors. This greatly reduces cost and physical foot print. With the advent of wireless and other forms of communications with field devices PLC hardware seem to lead in flexibility.
Our Plant Data Historian experience centers around the OSIsoft PI System and in our opinion leads the pack in Enterprise wide integration. As I mentioned our experience is weighted heavily with the PI System but there are several excellent Plant Data Historian Systems that should be selected as individual Process Data collection needs dictate. An example is Vista Control Systems located in Los Alamos New Mexico. This is a multi-platform Plant Data Historian with data collection rates only limited by the hardware the system is installed. Plus they collect pictures as data from Cameras or other video systems. A nice licensing feature is they license the server the system is installed not by tag count i.e.: unlimited tag names. Data scan rates of milliseconds allow Process Data resolution for extremely fast processes or equipment. Connectivity to Enterprise Systems such as SAP is critical. Hope this helps.

Tjeerd Zwijnenberg • Honeywell has a huge installed base in the O&G sector and covers L1 (field instrumentation) to L5 in the boardroom and all between. Our systems are based on Experion PKS, which is an open scalable platform. Have a look at:

In Africa, Most major vendors have a share of the market. On the historian side, PI is definitely leading the pack around here. For DCS, Honeywell have footprints.. but new projects either want HMI/PLC/PAC combination ( e.g. WonderWare/FactoryTalk on AB/Siemens PLC) or the full blown DCS. I think early adoption of Foundation fieldbus (or perhaps early marketing of that fact) gave DeltaV and Centum the edge. For Power plants.. Siemens and GE still kinda lead the pack ( depending on who supplies the turbines). If its GE.. then its typically Cimplicity on Fanuc PAC or any other GE IP combo.
Suprisingly, there are also pockets of market for Smar, a brazilian company. Overall, the market is kinda spread out and there is still more room to play.

There are many vendors example is PI from OSI or GE products. many of the DCS suppliers do have thier products as well.
