I would like to share our experiences around the world about main pipeline pump stations.

First Fact:

Parallel or Series?

Which configuration is better for crude or refined product mainline pumps station?

In parallel configuration (2 identical pumps) you shall consider the scenario when one of the two operating pumps fails. The remaining operating pump will increase its flow that probably will cause cavitation and drive overload. You need some type of protection in this case.

Mr Sanjari, why would you consider it a "fact" with what is best, parallel vs series.

Application is the primary drive for what type of system you would install, correct? Whatever type of fluid you are pumping, the result would be the same. Parallel boosts volume and series boosts pressure.

Kurt ;

You are right .

Parallel or series; depends on the application. Just as a reminder : even some parallel configurations do have upstream and downsream booster pumps.

Normally these booster pumps are in serie with main parallel pumps.

Upstream pumps to be installed to provide the mainline pump with the sufficient NPSH.

And downstream to boost the pressure if required.

Nahum;

Spare philosophy and redundancy is the first thing that to be considered in mainline pump station.
